What are wisdom teeth?
Third molars are commonly referred to as wisdom teeth. They are usually the last teeth to develop and are located in the back of your mouth, behind your second molars. Their development is usually completed between the middle teenage years and early twenties, a time traditionally associated with the onset of maturity and the attainment of wisdom.
Wisdom Teeth do not always develop properly. If you do not have enough room in your mouth or if your teeth become impacted, your wisdom teeth may need to be removed. This process is much easier and safer with a younger patient and is often done during the teenage years. Whether or not you decide to have your wisdom teeth removed, you should certainly be evaluated by a dentist, orthodontist, or by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
